Below are some of our favorite freeware / open-source software utilities:-
 TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source Disk Encryption SoftwareFree open-source disk encryption software for Windows XP/2000/2003 and Linux http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php  AxCrypt AxCrypt is a powerful, yet extremely easy to use file encryption program. It integrates directly with Windows Explorer, enabling encryption, decryption, viewing and editing of any file with just a few clicks of the mouse. AxCrypt uses the AES-128 and SHA-1 algorithms, which comply with US Government and Internet standards. Additional features include creation of self-decrypting files, automatic re-encryption after editing, secure deletion (wiping) of files and temporaries, cryptographic data integrity validation, separate key and data encrypting keys, secure internal memory handler and more. I also like Bestcrypt. It's not free for windows and works a lot like Truecrypt. It is free for linux and the source code is publicly available so that it can be tested for security issues. Has a few features that are not present in current version of Truecrypt:

Works similar to Truecrypt in concept but makes use of DMG files. These can usually only be opened on a mac. This doesn't support plausible deniability. Supports AES-128. And windows has its own thing .. EFS and now with vista its bitlocker. This warrants an article by itself. Linux of course, supports various methods of partition encryption. This can also be turned into a pretty lengthy article. Same goes with OpenBSD and I guess FreeBSD (not that much experience there).

Freeware open source is nonsense to start with. Free in open source doesn't mean free as in freeware. It means 'freedom' rather than price.

FreeOTFE is a free, open source, "on-the-fly" transparent disk encryption program for PCs and PDAs
Using this software, you can create one or more "virtual disks" on your PC/PDA. Hi Maccode-I've been using Trucrypt personally for a while now without any hitches so what I can tell is only from personal experience. That said, if you are feeling experimental, I recommend you try out Truecrypt on a VM instance resembling your live environment.
