Welcome to maltainfosec.org

This is the first post on this newly registered website, so I will begin by briefly explaining the idea behind this maltainfosec.org

The aim of the group is to create a bigger awareness on the island for the need of information security in various areas of computing and to create a local community of individuals with unique experiences who are ready to share information with other persons in need of professional advice.

“** Information security professionals have been instrumental in changing the mindset of executives and gaining management buy-in that security is an enterprise-wide problem, not just an IT issue.”

I've had an interest in computers since I was 12 when my dad first bought me a Memotech MTX 512s2 on the small island of Malta. I self taught myself BASIC and later a database language called NODDY custom to the MTX. My first database program was a student register which used a combination of NODDY and BASIC and saved itself on cassettes. As I slowly became more obsessed with computers, I took to the painful path of learning the Z80 programming (yes, the MTX had a Z80 chip!) only to be outpaced by friends who had the Amstrad CPC464 at the time :-(

As computers evolved, my first Goldstar 286 PC evolved from DOS and Windows 3.0 to a PC running Windows 3.11 and later Windows 95 (with difficulty). My interest in communications also evolved and I had my first (2-line) BBS up and running at age 14. Then known as 'challengers den', I delved into ASCII screens, modems & transfer protocols still found in programs like Telix or Procomm. This was my pre-internet stage when getting an email address was an expensive feat which I couldn't afford. The BBS boasted 250 sign-ups and was often always occupied as I ran a licensed version of TriBBS (couldn't afford WildCat!)

From then on, I assembled PCs, blew countless 386 cache memory chips, worked on enterprise server hardware and supported countless people with the woes of Windows 95 and home-based communications. My programming experience expanded into C/C++ and Pascal whilst I learnt the ropes of Software Engineering in a very short time at University.

Since then I've worked in IT for 15 years, including 7 years as a Systems Engineer,3 years as an IT Manager and over 5 years as a lead security analyst with a card processing company. My diverse background has allowed me to interact in almost every facet of IT - more recently Information Security and Computer Forensics - subjects I am certified in and have been teaching since 2006 at advanced level.

I've studied software engineering and hold an Hons degree in Computing and Information Systems. With an aim to bridge my technical expertise with the legal aspect of information security, I am currently reading a Masters in Law degree in IT & Telecommunications from the University of Strathclyde.

I am an active member of ISACA and the Institute of Analysts & Programmers (MIAP) as well as the owner of maltainfosec.org
