Humor: Dilbert’s CIA Triad

Scott Adams does it again. This Dilbert strip perfectly captures the tension between security and usability that every information security professional deals with on a daily basis.

The CIA Triad – Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability – forms the foundation of information security. But in practice, these three pillars are often in conflict with each other. Increase confidentiality and you often decrease availability. Maximize availability and you may compromise integrity.

Finding the right balance is what separates good security from bad security. The goal is not to maximize all three simultaneously (which is generally impossible) but to find the appropriate trade-offs for your specific business context and risk tolerance.

Of course, explaining this to management is another challenge entirely – which is exactly what makes this Dilbert strip so relatable.
